Liebster Award (Q. and A. Fun!)

I was tagged to do this Liebster Award post by Shawna of The Director of Awesome (best blog title ever or what!). So thank you Shawna, it's an honour being nominated...where's my dusty old Oscars speech?;-0). If you enjoy poetry, art, and wittily self deprecating fashion posts that make you spit your coffee/tea everywhere, then do check out her unique and lovely blog!

As far as I understand it it's aimed at encouraging new bloggers, a friendship spreading type tag, Liebster...well I don't really know many new bloggers, most of the blogs I read have been around for longer than me anyway! It sounds like it's for new/smaller blogs like me, so I will go out on a limb and nominate a few that I enjoy regardless, hope they take part if they want to if they haven't done this before (or even so, it's still a fun thing!).

1. Are you a morning person?

Not really, no! I really come alive around 6 p.m. though!

2. What's your best form of exercise?

I love to dance and used to enjoy Zumba and other dance related workouts. A couple of years ago my knees went a bit wonky though (Patellar tracking disorder I think it’s called), which means repetitive twisty knee movements are a no no (you will still catch me bopping around my living room to Taylor Swift though!). I also enjoy Pilates and Yoga. Lately I've been pumping iron again (erm hand weights!) while I watch telly, as my arms are getting a bit wobblier than I'd like.

3. What's your favorite food?

Anything that’s bad for me lol! Definitely a sweet tooth, but I really love fruity flavours the most. Basically I want all of the sugar and the fruit in my mouth all at once! Pineapple sherbet frappes/freezes used to be my crack, sadly you can't get them in the U.K.!

4. Are you a dog or cat person?

I’m quite allergic to cats, I did have a couple of kittens briefly when I was a kid (one didn't get on with the dog, one ran away), but at heart I’m a doggy girl. Doggy girl? Umm! Dog person. My childhood dog Fluffy was a mutt, a wild pain in the butt if I’m honest, but I loved her so. I hope to have another dog someday though!

5. Do you plan to fight aging or age gracefully?

I don’t think they are mutually exclusive? I don't think it is inherently ungraceful to age in any particular way. The choice is yours. The question to me implies, will I do plastic surgery/other stuff. Which I don’t plan to, but I wouldn’t entirely rule it out. No knives if I can help it anyway! But I do use "anti-ageing" (I know ;-0) creams and try to look after my skin. I have quite a chubby cheeked oily skinned face so even at 40 I’m not that wrinkly yet, but I won’t lie, I have contemplated botox on my eyebrow furrows. I do really want to try those Frownie things (they're like band aids you put on your wrinkles?!), has anyone else tried them? Also I want to get more into facercise!

I do like being able to take goofy frown selfies, something Botox would put a damper on!

6. Why did you start blogging? For as long as I can remember random friends would tell me I should have a blog. The prospect terrified me if I’m honest. What would I say? Who would care? (Um yeah I still am not convinced on either of these!). I always enjoyed reading blogs though, and in the past few years got really into writing reviews, so I figured why not just write what I feel like on my very own little blog?

7. What was your biggest childhood dream?

I was a run of the mill wannabe ballerina girl when I was quite young. I was always very keen on playacting, though, insisting my friends and I do Grease 2 over and over again. I of course got to play the lead Stephanie because we had the same name – such a little Capricorn bully! Though it was really the only time I asserted myself as a leader, I think because it was something I really loved. Then I met my friend Vanessa, who at the age of ten formed a plan that we would one day move to New York together, she would be a model and I would be her photographer (and ideally we would date Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon was mine and John Taylor was hers so there were be no fighting on that very important issue!). I would have followed Vanessa anywhere, she was the first girl I really idolised. She moved away to Nebraska, as most of my friends eventually moved away (the perils of life in a navy town). And I never really thought we’d see each other again, once we hit our teens we’d mostly lost touch. But one night in college she called me, and we talked for hours, and it was as if no time had passed at all. And less than a year later we were living together in a studio flat in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, studying acting full time in the West Village. So sometimes childhood dreams do come true, in their own way!

8. First thing you do in the morning is ... (OK, of non-embarrassing things :) )

Coffeeee! I do a zombie walk towards the coffee maker, literally grunting along the way, take out my awesome Wonder Woman mug that my Mom got me this Christmas (It's this one here! It holds like a cup and a half of coffee!) and wait for the life force to brew.

9. Do you prefer art to shock, be beautiful or both?

When I was a teenager I was definitely a pretty paintings/Impressionist sort of girl. I loved Monet. And still do. But while I don’t pretend to understand modern art, there are times I have been stopped in my tracks and really moved/intrigued/otherwise stunned by it.  A Cindy Sherman exhibit at the Moma that I saw years ago, Chuck Close’s amazing paintings that look so unbelievably real, even Kandinsky and Dali who are more early modern art. I have come to really enjoy surrealism in art in particular. The Dali museum in Tampa is the bee's knees. Still consider myself a complete bumpkin on the topic though!

10. What is your favourite fragrance? (brand names or maybe you just like vanilla)

I really adore sandalwood, the Body Shop used to make an oil (they tend to start it  up again every so often then discontinue) that I loved, still have some. It just invigorates me, reminds me of autumn in New England and always will. I also love the discontinued (all of my favourite scents seem to get discontinued!) Gucci eau de Parfum, I have been eking out a bottle for a few years now and save it for special occasions.

11. What is your most frequently occurring dream?

I was just talking about this on Shawna’s blog! It’s the packing dream, or the travel stress dream (last night I dreamt I missed my flights because I had been awake for two days straight and fell asleep). But more frequently, I am packing for a holiday, last minute, and no matter how much I pack the piles of clothes just keep accruing. I’m sure it means something (other than the obvious I have too many clothes!).

The next part of this if you choose to participate is to provide 11 random facts about yourself, so here goes!

11 random facts about me....

I learned how to drive on a stick shift, which totally isn't a big deal in the U.K., but was a bit more impressive in America! No one but truckers drive sticks in America!

I hate custard.

I broke my arm when I was three years old running up a hill (foreshadowing a lifetime of clumsiness!). It remains my first memory.

I ran away from home when I was around 9 (I didn't make it far, the cellar well in our backyard I believe!)

I really love exfoliating my feet (gross I know!)

I love horror movies. Not the icky torture style ones though. More "Get in the closet, oh no he's behind you!" type ones.

I was a vegetarian for ten years.

I have moved around 10 times in my life (not counting the little mini/same town or state moves). I have lived in 4 states and 2 different countries.

I have tried and failed to roller/ice skate numerous times. I am useless and end up on my bum, but love to watch ice skating and dream of doing the triple sow cow!

I had a teeny tiny part in a movie which I have never seen.

I still remember every song I had to sing in middle school chorus (we were fairly competitive and went to the state championships, it was a tiny bit Glee, long before Glee!). Which means a lot of songs are just eternal mash ups with three other songs in my head. Which is maybe why I really loved (season one, then I got a bit bored) Glee...I imagine a lot of other former chorus types are the same?

Ok then!...So the next part of the Liebster process is for me to come up with 11 questions I would like answered! Hmm...

1.Who is your favourite musician?

2. Do you believe in love at first sight?

3.What's your happiest childhood memory (um or any happy memory!)?

4. What is something you have done that you are proud of?

5. What is your favourite ice cream flavour? (And if you don't like ice cream...um no, I can't deal with that! ;-)

6. If you could live anywhere in the world other than where you are, where would it be?

7.  If you could only take one book to a desert island what would it be?

8. Do you believe in God or some other life force/spiritual belief system?

9. What's your star sign and do you buy into astrology?

10. Why did you start blogging? (Going to include this one again because I like it!)

11. Is there a hobby or something else that you enjoy that you think is unique/not popular among anyone else you know?

Ok so that's it, the idea is to answer those questions I've provided, provide your 11 random facts, and to think up 11 of your own and pass it on...I guess? But like Shawna I think it's fun to just answer as many and create as many as you can deal with! If you prefer the questions I chose to answer maybe do some of those instead, or Shawna's original post  has some great questions as well!

This was fun but kind of felt like the universe playing a joke on me as last week I was bemoaning the death of the Facebook "notes" - aka the 100 questions type posts we used to pass around 4 years ago! So this is the blogosphere's version!

I am going to tag three bloggers who I read regularly and enjoy, feel free to participate (or not!) and do the Leibster widgets and things also if you like with your post:

Becky at The United States of Becky, because I love everything she writes.

Elinor at Retrogirl, because she's usually too busy for super wordy posts (she paints lovely things!) but I'd like to read one!

Heather at It's Like A Potato: I like her sense of humor and she also does great Sunday Confessions posts!

Liebster rules for anyone participating:

1. Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog on your blog.

2. Display the award on your blog — by including it in your post and/or displaying it using a “widget” or a “gadget”. (Note that the best way to do this is to save the image to your own computer and then upload it to your blog post.)

3. Answer 11 questions about yourself, which will be provided to you by the person who nominated you.

4. Nominate other bloggers that you feel deserve the award.

5. Create a new list of questions for the bloggers to answer.

6. List these rules in your post.

7. Inform the people/blogs that you nominated that they have been nominated for the Liebster Award and provide a link for them to your post so that they can learn about it.(They may have never heard of it.)

Ok have at it, or start your own Liebster chain if you like! :-)

  1. Ooh...thank you for nominating me. Admittedly, I do kinda love these types of posts. I love learning about the bloggers I follow and I usually discover one or two in the mix. (The Director of Awesome blog seems pretty interesting, I haven't checked the others out just yet.) - I will be doing this one soon! :) And yeah, it is impressive that you learned on a stick shift. I'm in the automatic then, now, and forever land.

    1. Thanks Becky, I think it's a fun thing to do too, esp. as even though I like to write, I feel majorly awkward just offering up this kind of stuff un-prompted! But I love reading these kinds of posts too.

  2. Thanks for tagging me! I love these little quiz things.
Mega sweet tooth over here too! I have calmed down a bit on the sugar since getting older, but I still eat more than I should. What movie were you in??? Was it on purpose??? My sister had a neighbor in Santa Cruz that played one of the background clowns in Killer Klowns from Outer Space, but i always wondered how could she *prove* it, ha ;)

    1. Oh that sounds really awesome actually! I just this week applied to be an extra, I thought it might be fun. It was a small, foreign language weird indie thing that I don't even think you can buy on dvd. I played a club girl taunting an old man! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313203/?ref_=ttpl_pl_tt Anyway hope you get round to it would love to read your answers! :-)

  3. You did a great job of this, Steff! I am impressed, as always, with how thorough you are. It was fun to read and notice the things we have in common-I grew up and still live in a military town, only watched season one of Glee, fall when I skate. You look about 25 so you must be doing the aging gracefully thing quite well. I am going to check out the blogs you nominated. Oh and I had no idea I make you spit out your coffee. :-) xoxo

    1. Thanks for tagging me Shawna! I love your wit, it's so rare in fashion blogs for someone to not take themselves terribly seriously, it really makes you stand apart! xo
